Clothing Guide
WHAT WORKS BEST
- Cotton baby clothes
- Onesies + bodysuits
- Pajamas
- T-shirts
- Dresses
- Swaddles and burp rags
- Lightweight sweaters
- Bamboo
- Most soft, lightweight clothing can be used. Cotton always works best for overall feel of the quilt.
HARD DETAILS
- Ribbed fabrics
- Stretchy knits
- Sweatshirts
- Pants
- Clothing with appliqué
- Clothing with elastic
- These usually depend on the amount of usable fabric and the construction of the garment.
HARD DETAILS
Buttons, snaps, zippers, grommets, gems, sequins, and other raised embellishments not made of fabric cannot go through the longarm quilting area. I CAN still use the garment by cutting around those details and using the surrounding fabric in the quilt.
PLEASE AVOID
- Bathing suits
- Spandex leggings
- Very stretchy fabrics
- Fabrics with a high spandex content
- Chunky or loosely woven knits
- Very thick fabrics
- Heavily textured materials
TINY CLOTHES
I can often work with even the tiniest pieces. When a garment doesn’t provide enough fabric for standard cutting, additional piecing or appliqué may be needed. These pieces may include an additional charge due to the extra work required.
STAINS + WEAR
Clothing doesn’t need to be perfect. Stains, fading, and little signs of wear are part of childhood and can be part of the story of your quilt too. If there are any stains or worn areas you do not want included, please let me know. Heavily damaged or weakened fabric may not be usable.
CLOTHING PREP
Wash and completely dry all clothing WITHOUT fabric softener. Check pockets, leave garments whole. Label any especially meaningful pieces you’d like me to prioritize, and only send clothing you are comfortable having permanently cut.
PATTERN CHOICE
Each quilt pattern has its own recommended and maximum number of clothing pieces included, based on how that design uses the fabric. Some patterns are better suited for larger graphics and motifs, while others also need plenty of smaller, simpler areas of fabric. You’re welcome to send more than the maximum included amount so I have extra options to choose from. If I use any pieces beyond the maximum included for your quilt, an additional per-piece fee will apply.
ORGANIZING CLOTHING
There’s no need to individually label every piece. If you’re combining clothing from multiple children, years, or people and want certain pieces kept together or used in a particular way, please separate and label those groups before shipping.
SHIPPING
Pack clothing inside large resealable plastic bags or a vacuum-seal bag before placing everything in a sturdy shipping box. This helps keep your clothing clean, protected, and compact during transit. Use the exact shipping address provided in your Kalina Home instructions, and triple-check that the name and address on your shipping label match exactly before sending. Please use a tracked shipping method and keep your tracking number until your package is confirmed as received.
WHAT COMES BACK
Unused whole garments will be returned with your finished quilt. Clothing that is used must be cut apart, so leftover scraps and remnants from those pieces are not guaranteed to be returned.

I put everything together in one simple Clothing Guide so you can read through it at your own pace, print it if you’d like, and keep it handy while gathering and preparing your clothing.
